Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the most challenging global events in recent years, causing unprecedented disruptions in daily life. Students are among the groups most affected by these changes, facing significant disruptions in the education system and their social interactions. This review study was conducted to examine the relationship between mental health status and cognitive performance among students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods:
This study was conducted as a systematic review. Data were collected from reputable databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Embase using keywords including "mental health," "cognitive function," "students," and "COVID-19." Articles published between 2020 and 2023 that examined the relationship between mental health and students' cognitive performance were selected for review.
Results:
In this study, 87 articles were found in the initial review and 15 articles were included in the study after screening. The findings of this systematic review indicate that students' mental health was significantly affected during the COVID-19 pandemic due to stress, anxiety, depression, and lifestyle changes. The decline in mental health directly impacted cognitive performance. The findings suggest that social support networks and psychological interventions can improve students' cognitive performance.
Conclusion:
This study highlights the serious impact of mental health problems on students' cognitive functioning, particularly during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress can affect cognitive functions, including memory, attention, decision-making, and problem-solving. Universities should establish supportive environments to enhance students' mental health and cognitive performance during times of crisis
