Objective: Tobacco-free villages can serve as an effective model for reducing or eliminating tobacco use in rural communities and play an important role in promoting social health. The present study aimed to analyze the strategies for realizing a tobacco-free village in the village of Damagh Sefid, Sarpol-e Zahab County, and to identify the factors affecting the success and sustainability of this plan.
Methods: This study was descriptive-analytical and conducted with a combined qualitative and quantitative approach. The statistical population consisted of 20 people (10 villagers and 10 local managers, members of the Islamic Council, and local trustees) from a total of 26 households living in the village, who were selected by census method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and a researcher-made questionnaire with open and closed questions. The validity of the instrument was confirmed by experts and its reliability was confirmed through Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats technique was used to analyze the data.
Results: The findings showed that the small size of the village, high level of social empathy, active participation of residents and implementation of awareness programs were the most important strengths of the project. On the other hand, limited communication access, insufficient awareness of the consequences of tobacco use, prevalence of hookah uses, and tolerant attitudes towards smoking are considered as weaknesses of the project. The support from the people, the effective presence of the Ministry of Health, the activities of NGOs, and the participation of government and non-government institutions were the most important opportunities for the implementation of the project. Also, the presence of smoking tourists, the commuting of young people to the city, economic pressures, and the impact of some media programs were considered as the main threats facing the project.
Conclusion: The implementation of the tobacco-free village project in the village of Damagh Sefid has been successful overall, but its continuation requires attention to economic, social, and cultural challenges. It is suggested that this project be pursued as a sustainable program and that educational, institutional, and social support be strengthened to maintain the status of a smoke-free village in the coming years.
