Introduction: One of the important reasons for the rapid decline in fertility rates is the one-child behavior of Iranian families. This study aimed to determine the effect of an educational intervention based on the SOC (Stages of Change) approach on childbearing in single-child women referring to comprehensive health service centers in Shoushtar City in 2024.
Methods: In this study, 80 women were selected through quota sampling and divided into two groups of 40: intervention and control. Data were collected using demographic forms and questionnaires on attitudes towards childbearing, social and economic status, and behavior change of the SOC approach, which includes the stages (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and fertility preservation), before and three and six months after the intervention. The educational program was implemented over a period of 4 weeks. The data were analyzed using statistical tests with SPSS version 26 software.
Results: The average age of women was 29.56 ± 4.80 years. The level of attitude after the educational intervention in the intervention group increased significantly compared to the control group (P > 0.001), and at three months (P < 0.001) and six months (P < 0.001) after the education, this positive effect was seen significantly only in the intervention group. In the field of behavior change, the intervention group moved towards readiness for pregnancy at three months (P = 0.012) and six months (P < 0.001), while the control group moved towards readiness for pregnancy at three months (P = 0.034) and six months (P = 0.034) after the educational intervention. Finally, a positive and significant relationship was seen between the attitude towards childbearing at different times of three months (P = 0.012) and six months (P < 0.001) after the intervention and the steps of behavior change of the SOC approach only in the intervention group.
Conclusion: Conclusion: Training based on a behavior change approach improved women's attitudes toward childbearing. And a large number of mothers gained the necessary preparation for pregnancy.
