Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the effect of self-compassion on the physical and mental health of patients with type 2 diabetes, emphasizing the mediating role of self-efficacy.
Methods: This study used a descriptive-correlational and structural equation modeling approach. The statistical population included patients with type 2 diabetes who referred to Imam Sajjad Hospital in Tabriz (AS) in 2024. Considering the inclusion criteria, 250 people were selected through purposive sampling and responded to research tools, including standard questionnaires on quality of life, self-compassion, and self-efficacy. The data were analyzed using SPSS, AMOS, and the structural modeling method.
Results:  Self-compassion had a positive and significant effect on self-efficacy (β = 0.70), and self-efficacy was directly related to physical health (β = 0.68) and mental health (β = 0.56). The direct effect of self-compassion on physical health was significant(β = 0.22), but its direct effect on mental health  was not significant (β = 0.18). The results showed that self-efficacy plays a mediating role between self-compassion and both physical and mental health.
Conclusion:   The findings emphasize the importance of paying attention to internal resources, especially self-compassion and self-efficacy, in promoting the health of patients with diabetes. Teaching self-compassion and strengthening self-efficacy can help improve quality of life and physical and mental health. Psychological interventions based on these components are useful in treatment programs for patients with diabetes.
